Zirconium dioxide is a white crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is difficult to dissolve in water, dilute sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.
Zirconium dioxide is one of the most important ceramic materials. It is widely used in ceramic glazes, in enamels and for lining furnaces and high temperature molds. With its good chemical stability and high temperature resistance, zirconium dioxide is also widely used in refractory materials. Single crystals of the cubic phase of zirconia are commonly used as a substitute for diamond in jewelry.
